WOMEX comes to Gateshead

In October 2005 the UK will host the largest world music business expo for the first time. WOMEX 2005 will be held at The Sage Gateshead on 26th-30th October, with networking opportunities for artists to meet world music producers, agents, managers, record labels, promoters and festival officials along with a wide variety of cultural organisations. OfSTED praise for Gateshead Schools

Well done to Joanne Gilmour, Amanda Crooks, Mr Callum Kidd and staff at Carr Hill Primary and to Christine Hanratty, Mrs Hardy and staff at Caedmon Primary School. Both schools came in for exceptional praise in recent OfSTED reports and both belong to the Cultural & Creativity Ambassador network.
Carr Hill now ranks in the top 15% of Primaries in the country.

Inspiration at Kelvin Grove Primary School

The new play area at Kelvin Grove includes an allotment where vegetables are grown, wildlife gardens, grasses, shrubs and an area designed to attract mini-beasts; all contributing to the children's knowledge of nature.

Changes to school meals in Gateshead

Gateshead School Meals Service has taken chips off the menus in Primary schools this year. The borough's reputation for good school food is underpinned by its reduction in salt and sugar content, dietician checks and menus sent to parents. Seventy-five percent of food is prepared on site using fresh ingredients.

Seven Stories, the Centre for Children's Books, is proud to have Children's Laureate, Jacqueline Wilson and her principal illustrator Nick Sharratt opening our new visitor centre at 11:00am on Friday 19 August.
Kicking off the opening day celebrations, Jacqueline Wilson and Nick Sharratt will cut the ribbon to allow visitors into our brand new seven-storey building and journey into the world of children's literature. Everyone is invited to our grand opening day!

Sculpture Day in Saltwell Park - an event for families

Gateshead Council's family Sculpture Day returns on Sunday 2nd October this year.
Wood, tools and nails are provided and professional artists will be on hand to help young people creating wooden sculptures on this year's theme: Noah's Ark.
While there, you can also make your own ceramic Raku pottery tile and listen to the Cajun Aces at the bandstand.
The event takes place in the Grove, at the south end of the Park, from 11am-4pm and entry is free (if you are making sculptures, you will need to bring a hammer).

New Chief Executive at Newcastle's Theatre Royal

Following the sad death of Peter Sarah in April, the theatre has now appointed Philip Bernays as the new Chief Executive.
Mr Bernays has worked previously with the Arts Council, the Pleasance in Edinburgh, the London Young Vic and the Cheltenham Everyman Theatre.

Johnny Wilkinson in Gateshead

The England Rugby fly-half visited our new Activ8 junior gym at the Leisure Centre recently as part of his new CBBC TV programme, Johnny's Hotshots.
He'll be coaching a different group of boys and girls each week in rugby skills and looking for new sporting talent.
