WOMEX 2005 is part of the 2005 Alive Festival of Music - a yearlong celebration of music across the North East and is supported by Arts Council England, One NorthEast, Gateshead Council and NewcastleGateshead Initiative's cultural programme.

WOMEX is a real pilgrimage for world music professionals. It consists of a trade fair, conference sessions, film screenings, day and evening Showcases and concludes with the WOMEX Award celebrations including a special award for Zanzibar's most famous cultural ambassador Bi Kidude. It's a dream opportunity for people interested in the flourishing world music scene as who knows when WOMEX will next grace the shores of the UK (for further details about WOMEX 2005 please visit www.womex.com)

WOMEX is the biggest world music business expo on Earth and it's a major coup for the North East to have The Sage Gateshead hosting the prestigious event. The Sage Gateshead has lobbied hard along with other key partners including Arts Council England to bring WOMEX to the region. Organisers started the Olympic-esque campaign over six years ago, long before the arrival of The Sage Gateshead with a pipedream that would cement the North East's reputation as being recognised as a true cultural force.

The creative heartbeat of The Sage Gateshead is to provide an international home for music and musical discovery, which is ultimately represented by the expectation and drive behind WOMEX 2005. The long-term benefits of staging WOMEX will be evident with the development of crucial international relations between regional representatives of the world music scene and their global counterparts.

Public Showcase events: WOMEX 2005 isn't only available to delegates the general public can also enjoy the electric world music vibe and experience this energy firsthand by attending the special WOMEX Showcase events. The variety on offer is second to none with performance styles ranging from: Afro-pop to Gypsy; electronic tabla breaks to reggae; traditional folk to jazz; Hip-Hop to Tango; and Asian Blues to GangstaFolk.
