Two European Conferences for the Cultural Sector

As the UK Presidency of the EU concludes,
EUCLID, the UK's EU Cultural Contact Point,
is pleased to announce...
Cultural Diversity: The European Experience
Tuesday 6th December, The Drum, Birmingham
Not the European Union: Other European Sources of Funds
Friday 9th December, Tate Modern, London
Both conferences will be looking at some of the key issues for the cultural sector from the European perspective and each will explore these issues through stimulating presentations from experts from across Europe and the UK, providing an opportunity for discussion and debate.

Both conferences will run from 10:00 – 16:30

Read on for full details

Cultural Diversity: The European Experience
Tuesday 6th December, The Drum, Birmingham

The UK is a culturally diverse population and our cultural sector is taking significant steps to ensure that issues of cultural diversity are being addressed. The Arts Council has implemented the decibel project, the National Campaign for the Arts is launching its Diversity Strategy and many individual organisations have been or are looking forward to being involved in a wide range of eminent projects and initiatives.

But what do we know of the European experience?
How are other countries responding to the issue of cultural diversity?
What policies have they implemented?
What examples of good practice can they share with us?
This conference will explore the strategies and policies of our European colleagues. Delegates will hear about specific projects and initiatives that seek to promote cultural diversity and address the challenges of contemporary European society. The conference also aims to explore new links and opportunities for co-operation and learning.

Speakers include:

Dorota Ilczuk*, Director of Foundation Pro Cultura, Warsaw; President of Circle
János Zoltán Szabó*, Research Officer, The Budapest Observatory
Adrian Grima, Inizjamed (working on cultural diversity projects), Malta
Johannes Studinger, Media, Entertainment & Arts Sector of Union Network International (UNI-MEI)
Madelena Grossmann, Chief Administrator, Creating Cultural Capital Project, Council of Europe
Samenua Sesher, Director, decibel, Arts Council England
Victoria Todd, Director, National Campaign for the Arts
SuAndi, Director, Black Arts Alliance

* Dr. Ilczuk and Mr. Szabo will be discussing the work undertaken by the Circle network on the Metropolis of Europe: Urban Cultural Life and Inter-City Cultural Interactions for 'Cultural Diversity' in Europe comparative study - a research project undertaken in six major European cities.

PLUS! Delegates will receive a free copy of each of UNESCO's Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and the Council of Europe's Opatija Declaration: Learning about intercultural dialogue.

Who should attend...?

This conference is not just aimed at those working specifically in cultural diversity - all in the cultural sector have a responsibility to respond to these challenges and opportunities. Whether you are a practitioner, a manager, a funder or a policy maker, this conference will inform and stimulate from the European perspective.

EUCLID is pleased to present this event in association with Culture West Midlands

_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Not the European Union: Other European Sources of Funds
Friday 9th December, Tate Modern, London

The EU offers a wide range of funding opportunities for the cultural sector. But is that it at the European level?

Well, no. Other opportunities do exist from agencies such as the Council of Europe, from foundations and from trusts and sponsorship, amongst others.

This conference will look at these and other sources of funding, whilst exploring a number of the key issues that are involved in accessing these opportunities, including:

Whether these sources are primarily for cultural co-operation projects that involve partner organisations from multiple countries (and which must include the country that the foundation or trust is based in).
Whether there are any particular cultural differences to be aware of when approaching foundations or sponsors from other European countries.
The all important practical issues to be considered.
Speakers include:

Tony Venables, Director, European Citizens Action Service (ECAS)
Jordi Sànchez, Director, Jaume Bofill Foundation (TBC)
Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, General Secretary, Fondazione Adriano Olivetti, Italy
Dario Disegni, Head of Cultural Affairs and Institutional Relations, Compagnia di San Paolo
Pippa Collett, CEO, Spectrum Sponsorship, member of European Sponsorship Association (ESA)
Ardi Kolah, Sponsorship & Licensing Consultant
Philip Spedding, Head of A&B World, Arts & Business

Who should attend...?

This conference is aimed at all those seeking funding for cultural projects and initiatives or new ways of generating income - and also at all those whose job encompasses helping and advising others to locate and secure resources. The European context and experiences will both stimulate new ideas and reveal some new opportunities.

EUCLID is pleased to present this event in association with Tate Modern

The cost to attend...

Both conferences will run from 10:00 – 16:30 and the delegate cost to attend per conference is £110 (plus VAT). If you wish to attend both conferences or if additional delegates from the same organisation wish to attend either of the conferences, then the cost to attend is £90 (plus VAT) per delegate, per conference.

How to register...
There is an easy to complete booking form available online at www.euclid.info/uk/conferences/index.htm

Nature's Blueprint - photography exhibition at Saltwell Towers by Corinne Lewis

Free entry - work can be purchased
October 12th 2005 - January 12th 2006
Saltwell Towers
Saltwell Park
Gateshead

Read on for the background to this exhibition

Corinne Lewis's comment on her exhibition:

My ideas throughout this photographic study have primarily been about
patterns in nature, and the possibility that there may be a governing
blueprint for the natural world. This could potentially allow us to
understand our place in nature more thoroughly, and give us a better
understanding as to how the natural world operates.

I am also interested in how communities have changed their usage and
attitudes towards publicly owned outdoor space. There is a real sense
that Saltwell Park has been an oasis for many generations. This project
has created an opportunity therefore to introduce children to a place
that has been enjoyed throughout the past. My vision for the projects
future will be to generate an extensive photographic study spanning over
all four seasons. We will look to display this work as an internal and
an external installation, so that the park itself will become a gallery
space. In addition we will continue to develop the local communities'
involvement.

Nature’s Blueprint

The work on display is the culmination of several months work that took
place in and around Saltwell Park involving young people, local senior
residents and myself. As a local resident I feel fortunate to have such
a beautiful space so close to home and have been interested for some
time in doing some work here.

My work deals with nature- I find I am fascinated by organic and natural
forms, more often than not as embodied by plants and flowers. I am
repeatedly drawn to the recurrent patterns and shapes that are manifest
in nature and that hint at some sense of formulae or ‘blueprint’.

This is an idea first proposed by the Italian mathematician Fibonacci
(1170-1250) who identified a sequence of numbers (0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13...)
that have been noted to appear in nature: in the formation of seeds on a
flower head, the branching patterns of leaves in grasses and flowers and
the arrangement of tines on a pine cone. I suppose in a general sense I
am interested in exploring the significance and resonance of nature in
our daily lives. With such a broad range of species to be found in
Saltwell Park it seemed like the perfect place to do this kind of work.

In addition to this I have been able to work with groups of young people
in exploring some of these ideas in the creation of art pieces.
Furthermore, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know and interview a
number of local residents for whom the park has special significance.
Through hearing their tales, memories and thoughts of the park it is
clear that this is a much cherished place and has been for generations.
This just seems to underline the importance and value of public space
such as this to a local community.

Books Make Prizes - Gateshead Libraries

Gateshead Libraries is trying harder than ever to encourage children to join the library and to read more books. With this aim in mind it is launching an exciting competition, Books Make Prizes. The competition will run until 31 March 2006 and has two categories according to age. For 4-7 year olds there are five fabulous prizes chosen from this year’s Christmas must-have list, including Baby Annabell and Roboraptor. For the 8-15 year olds there are four prizes, a lap top computer, a digital camera, an ipod nano and a hand-held games console.

Entry requirements are that children should be members of the library and that they borrow books on four separate occasions. After answering a simple question they will then be entered into the prize draw. There will also be a monthly draw in both categories (music vouchers or ‘Toys for Us’ vouchers). Entry forms are available from all Gateshead Libraries or from our website:www.asaplive.com/iKnow/News.cfm?ccs=121&cs=1709

We will be sending out information packs to all Gateshead Schools w/c
14th November, so you’ll more about this in due course.
This is an excellent opportunity to encourage young people to use the library and to read books. Promoting the competition will enable us to reach as many children as possible.
