HOME SWEET HOME
Sunday November 20, 1pm - 3pm
Tickets £3, £2 concessions. The coach will leave from Red Star parcel office outside Newcastle Central Station at 1pm
Architect and architectural historian Rutter Carroll will lead this coach tour of exemplary 1960's social housing developments in Newcastle including Ryder and Yates' Kenton Bar Estate and Ralph Erskine's Byker Estate showing how these leading architects redefined the post-war architectural landscape of Tyneside.
FUTURO: A New Stance for Tomorrow
Wednesday November 23, 8.30pm, Tyneside Cinema
Tickets £3, £2 concessions
Having cut their teeth working with Lubetkin on Peterlee, Ryder & Yates created their own practice in 1953 and went on to design social housing in Newcastle and Washington as well as modernist commercial buildings such as the British Gas Research Centre in Killingworth. During the Northern Lights Film Festival, Rutter Carroll will talk about Ryder & Yates' vision for social housing in the North East before a screening of 'FUTURO - A New Stance for Tomorrow'. This Mika Taanilla film traces the rise and fall of Finnish architect Matti Suuronen's truly futuristic housing project which, in 1968 briefly set alight European hopes for a stylish modular living of the future.
