Corinne Lewis's comment on her exhibition:
My ideas throughout this photographic study have primarily been about
patterns in nature, and the possibility that there may be a governing
blueprint for the natural world. This could potentially allow us to
understand our place in nature more thoroughly, and give us a better
understanding as to how the natural world operates.
I am also interested in how communities have changed their usage and
attitudes towards publicly owned outdoor space. There is a real sense
that Saltwell Park has been an oasis for many generations. This project
has created an opportunity therefore to introduce children to a place
that has been enjoyed throughout the past. My vision for the projects
future will be to generate an extensive photographic study spanning over
all four seasons. We will look to display this work as an internal and
an external installation, so that the park itself will become a gallery
space. In addition we will continue to develop the local communities'
involvement.

Nature’s Blueprint
The work on display is the culmination of several months work that took
place in and around Saltwell Park involving young people, local senior
residents and myself. As a local resident I feel fortunate to have such
a beautiful space so close to home and have been interested for some
time in doing some work here.
My work deals with nature- I find I am fascinated by organic and natural
forms, more often than not as embodied by plants and flowers. I am
repeatedly drawn to the recurrent patterns and shapes that are manifest
in nature and that hint at some sense of formulae or ‘blueprint’.
This is an idea first proposed by the Italian mathematician Fibonacci
(1170-1250) who identified a sequence of numbers (0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13...)
that have been noted to appear in nature: in the formation of seeds on a
flower head, the branching patterns of leaves in grasses and flowers and
the arrangement of tines on a pine cone. I suppose in a general sense I
am interested in exploring the significance and resonance of nature in
our daily lives. With such a broad range of species to be found in
Saltwell Park it seemed like the perfect place to do this kind of work.
In addition to this I have been able to work with groups of young people
in exploring some of these ideas in the creation of art pieces.
Furthermore, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know and interview a
number of local residents for whom the park has special significance.
Through hearing their tales, memories and thoughts of the park it is
clear that this is a much cherished place and has been for generations.
This just seems to underline the importance and value of public space
such as this to a local community.
