Read all about Heworth Grange's new urban art mural

Heworth Grange School recently achieved specialist Arts College status. A mural was commissioned for the new Dance Studio, created by the pupils and Eye of the Fly artist Tor Bruce. The school's Cultural Ambassador, Sally Marshall, who co-ordinated the project, writes:

‘Society judges innocent eyes. True angels hide in disguise’

is the title of the urban style artwork that takes inspiration from music, dance and the buildings in the Heworth Area. ‘Eye of the Fly’ charity director Tor Bruce, believes that these projects are an important outlet for students to express their ideas. The artists employed by Eye of the Fly are starting work on Mon 13th, 15th and 16th of February after the school day. The project should be finished on Thurs 16th February.

The artwork successfully relates to the youth of today and gives them alternative ways to behave that embrace respect for diversity and humanity. Because the students have been involved and their ideas have been used as a focus, they feel that they have contributed to something very special.

The Head Teacher from Heworth Grange Arts College Mr Harrison Huddart, says
“The artwork clearly illustrates the dynamic nature of dance and relates to the youth culture of the students that we have at this school. The mural has changed the whole atmosphere of the dance studio and has created a space where the students feel comfortable. This in turn, will work to break down the barriers that boys sometimes have with dance. The ‘street dance’ that links in with the mural encourages students to express themselves more freely. It is great space now for kids to be who they want to be as they clearly identify with the studio.
A very worthwhile project
.

The older students have been excellent role models to the younger students by engaging with the creative tasks needed to make the project a success. Listening to the students’ ideas and using their thoughts to create images, poetry, street dance sequences, has been very productive. Further developments are planned which include an official opening ceremony and a mobile version of the artwork that can be used as a back drop for street dance performances and display work in different venues.

Durham City Arts' Free Range Music project invites you to The Music
Hatchery, a three-day celebration of music for children and young people
in Durham.

The Music Hatchery offers an exciting variety of activities and
workshops for young musicians alongside a series of thought-provoking
seminars, discussion groups and networking opportunities for music
leaders, both professional and amateur. The Sharing Event marks a year
of workshops and events from Free Range Music and showcases musical
talent from our young people and professional acts from around the

work with some of the best musicians on the scene. These include young

exciting and unique Dutch brass trio De Jongens Driest and British world
music contemporary brass band The Real Macaws.

Music leaders, arts practitioners and music teachers will have the
opportunity to discuss some of the major issues regarding the provision
of music for young people. Discussion groups will be led by experienced
and professional music leaders and practitioners from across the UK,
including Pete Moser of the highly successful 'More Music in Morcambe'
project, Robin Osterley, Chief Executive of Making Music, the National
Federation of Music Societies and Nigel Greenwood of the Real Macaws and

which will be supported by the 'virtual presence' of some of the leading
figures from the world of music, politics and public life.

Schoolchildren get the chance to broadcast to the nation!

A message from Ruth Gardiner, Editor of BBC7

This is the chance for schoolchildren in your county to get their creative writing on air - on the BBC's daily children's radio programme, The Big Toe Radio Show. The programme is for 9 to 11 year olds and is broadcast every day between 4 and 6pm on BBC 7. The show offers children the chance to hear stories, take part in phone in competitions, listen to interviews and music and join in with quizzes. Between now and Friday 24th February, the
show is running a nation-wide 'Sound Story' competition. The competition is inspired by BBC Radio 4's Reith
Lectures. This year's lecturer is the eminent conductor Daniel Barenboim and the title for the series is 'In the beginning was sound.' This is why we are asking school children to write a story or poem inspired by sound. The competition is open to any child of 14 years and under and Big Toe is very keen that school children from your area get the chance to take part.

For more details, please go to The Big Toe Radio Show's website at www.bbc.co.uk/bigtoe, and click on 'The SOUND STORY competition' on the right hand side of the home page. There you will be able to download an A4 size poster about the competition and see a detailed list of the rules.
You can listen to Big Toe on the website, on DAB digital radio, Freeview
channel 78, Digital Satellite channel 881 or on Digital cable (Telewest
Broadband channel 910/ntl home channel 866).

We look forward to receiving entries from school children in your county!

Best wishes,
Ruth Gardiner
Editor, BBC7

National Lottery Consultation

The future of arts lottery funding is being decided - make your voice heard.

To coincide with the renewal of the lottery licence, the Government is consulting the public on the future of the Lottery Good Causes and how National Lottery money should be distributed from 2009 onwards.
This is an opportunity for all of us who care about the arts to make our voices heard.

Making a difference to the North East
Over the last 10 years Arts Council England, North East has invested over £158 million of arts lottery funds in community projects, public art and regeneration across our region. This money has changed both the physical and cultural landscape of our region, making possible flagship projects such as the Angel of the North, The Sage Gateshead, BALTIC and Middlesbrough institute of modern art (mima), as well as countless community projects.

Your opinion counts
The consultation runs to 28 February 2006. We want to make sure that the arts continue to be supported by the National Lottery and would like to encourage you to respond to this consultation.
Whatever your involvement with the arts, your opinion really counts. This is your opportunity to speak out and help safeguard the future of the arts as a valuable and valued recipient of lottery funds.

To take part
You can take part in the consultation in the following ways:
Log on to www.lottery2009.culture.gov.uk and fill in the questionnaire on line.
Phone 020 7211 6372 to ask for a paper questionnaire.
Write to the Government at: Department for Culture, Media and Sport, 2-4 Cockspur Street, London SW1Y 5DH

Sonia Sabri is amongst the brightest and most inspirational of British born Indian dancers working today. This February GemArts and Dance City are bringing her new performance ‘RED’ to the North East. The show marks the first South Asian dance event to take place at the newly opened venue.

Sabri is part of a new generation of professional Kathak artists. Derived from the word ‘katha’, meaning the ‘art of storytelling’, Kathak dancing employs a combination of dancing, acting and singing making it one of the most dynamic performing arts in the world. Her work revisits the traditional structures of this classical North Indian dance, while integrating it with contemporary ideas and modern movement.

‘...a fine dancer, intense and intelligent...with her own drive and powerful personality...brimming with promise...make sure you catch her.’ The Times, UK

Through a combination of vigorous dance, arresting visual design and evocative music, her new show explores the cultural significance of the colour RED. The performance opens up our interpretations and associations with fire, heat, ritual and passion by breathing music and movement into language.

“…RED is a first class show…Sabri’s choreography climbs to extraordinary heights…cool, sharp brilliance...one of the greatest talents of contemporary Indian dance" Ballet Tanz

The Sonia Sabri Company was formed in 2001 with a desire to present classical Indian dance in a new light, without diluting its essential purity and integrity. The re-awakening of classical dance has proven exciting and relevant to audiences of all ages and cultural backgrounds from around the world.

RED unites mesmerising spins, rapid footwork and exquisitely detailed hand gestures alongside the driving rhythms, evocative trance beats and subtle melodies of a live musical accompaniment. A unique blend of musical genres such as Indian classical, Indian folk, Sufi, jazz and blues are employed to resonate the emotional and symbolic significance of the colour RED. The integration of dancers and musicians within the physical performance space is rare.

‘...such incredible musicality, it was impossible not to gaze in wonder and adoration…an uplifting crescendo of music and dance.’ Dance Europe

Performed by three dancers RED is both a physical and emotional expression of the human condition. Recognised for her enchanting stage presence, grace and musicality Sonia Sabri has been hailed by international critics as the 'leading light in the revival of Indian classical dance’.

‘…graceful…charming…an absolute electrifying performer.’

Pikomalan Sanomat, Finland
