Family archeology event in Blaydon Burn

Bygone Blaydon Burn
Saturday 10th June
1pm - 4pm

Local people will be given the chance to take part in a real archaeological dig in one of the region’s cradles of the Industrial Revolution. Exposing the past beneath your feet is one of the main attractions at a family event at Blaydon Burn in Gateshead.

Bygone Blaydon Burn, is being organised by Gateshead Council’s Countryside Team to give adults and children over 12 years old a rare glimpse of the area’s historic past.

As well as an archaeological dig, there will be loads of other activities including face painting, pottery, crafts, animals from the Bill Quay Farm, a treasure hunt and much more.

Also on offer will be short wildlife and history walks, all of them free-of-charge and there will also be traditional music from local folk musician Johnny Handle and the Geordie Road-Show Choir.

Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon.

For transport details and further information read on or telephone the Countryside Team on 0191 433 3524.

Blaydon Burn is an attractive, wooded valley running north east into the River Tyne which was once used as a source of water power for several mills. In the 19th Century, it became the site of activities such as coal mining, coke and brick works, many remnants of which have survived, lost amongst the woodlands in a beautiful natural setting.

The Bygone Blaydon Burn family event is being held on Saturday 10th June from 1.00pm to 4.00pm in the centre of Blaydon Burn. There is limited car parking near Thomas More School in Croftdale Road, from where it is a short half-mile stroll along a waymarked footpath to the Burn. Parking is also available at a temporary car park on Summerhill, Blaydon.

Bus services 32, 42 ands 639 operate between Gateshead Interchange and Thomas More School.

In addition, a minibus service operated by the Friends of Blaydon Burn will be running form Winlaton Community Centre calling at St Thomas More school and Blaydon car Park (next to the recycling area) to the centre of Blaydon Burn. The minibus will leave Winlaton at 12.30, 1.00 and 1.30 returning from the Burn at 3.00, 3.30 and 4.00pm
