Calling all History teachers - the Whickham Wanderers are offering talks and resources to Gateshead schools

Whickham Wanderers (The University of the Third Age) have a wealth of historical information to assist with the history curriculum including CDs, photos and a website which specialises in Twentieth Century life in the old Whickham Urban District.

Log on and meet people in Dunston, Marley Hill, Streetgate, Sunniside, Swalwell and Whickham, see how they lived, worked, worshipped, spent their leisure time and were educated. Find dramatic changes in life style from rural views to urban sprawl, mud tracks to the Western Bypass, Shanks's pony to two-car families, shops in front rooms to the Metro Centre and major industries disappearing.
Through times good and bad; war, peace, strikes and depression they managed to party!

We hope we will leave you thinking...

"Was it really like that?"................."I must tell them about"...

"Yes, that is how it was"....................."I did not know that!"...

Go to:

http://www.gatesheadgrid.org/wwu3a/

and look out for more from the Wanderers in the Ambassadors e-bulletins in the autumn.

Meanwhile, their office telephone number is: 496 1238.
