SCHOOL SHOWS SPECIAL TICKET PRICES FOR TWO HEAD-LINING SHOWS

This is a special invitation to see two of the headlining shows at the Sugar and Spice Festival. The Sugar and Spice Festival will be a huge, spectacular event for Gateshead, and indeed the whole region and is a dramatic celebration of African and Caribbean culture. There are two schools performances at the Festival site on Mill Road Car Park on the Gateshead Quays.

On Wednesday 10th October 'Mary Seacole (The Opera)' will be performed at 1.00pm by Gyenyame Performing Arts:
Mary Seacole was a remarkable woman; a Jamaican healer who worked in terrible conditions administering emergency medicine to soldiers from soldiers on both sides of the Crimean Battlefield. The work fuses Caribbean musical influences with existing Western operatic traditions, creating an inspiring and innovative piece of theatre.

On Friday 12th October 'On Liberation Street' by Grand Union Orchestra will be performed also at 1.00pm at the Mill Road Venue:
Come and experience the UK's leading exponents of original cross- cultural music; Grand Union Orchestra present 'On Liberation Street'. The massed performance combines the talents of up to 100 North East musicians and singers of all ages performing alongside the orchestra’s own brilliant range of musicians. The result is a glorious mix of musical styles, and a passionate and inspiring performance telling stories of the inspiring struggles of ordinary people against tyrants and warlords.

Tickets for the performances are £1 each, (the evening performances are £10/£8) so it is really is a fantastic offer for you all.
To book contact me, Fiona Kelly, on 0191 433 6927 or email: fionakelly@gateshead.gov.uk
and I will send tickets out to you directly.

I have recently been made aware of very important changes to the Creative Partnership's programme which will be implemented from April 2008 when the current phase of CP will end.

As Gateshead was not a designated CP area, schools within the borough have not been eligible for regular funding from Creative Partnerships. However, there will be a number of changes which will result in schools in a non-CP area being able to apply for regular, substantial funding for their creative curriculum. The attached document explains the changes in more depth and also how to register your schools interest. I feel that it is important for your school to be made aware of the funding which will be available, and wish to stress the importance of signing up on the CP website: <http://creativepartnershipsevents.co.uk/futureorg/>

The Drive Primary School have recently been awarded Artsmark Gold Award for their creative and imaginative arts curriculum. Alison Orton from the school has written an article describing how they were able to achieve this success:
We achieved Artsmark Gold, following a full audit of our arts provision. We are keen to encourage enjoyment of the arts and aim to help children achieve their full potential in life, by showing them a wide range of careers in the arts available to them.

We have a number of visiting artists, dance troops, musicians e.t.c. who all contribute to widening the childrens’ experiences. We have had a Chinese artist into school, Lip Lee, who worked with the children to make Chinese dragons and lanterns. We have had a visit from an African dance company. They did an hour long performance for the whole school, then worked with groups of children. This culminated in the children performing an African dance at the end of the day. We also had an African musician who worked with children throughout school, creating drumming sequences. This also culminated in a performance by the children.

We have developed strong links with Heworth Comprehensive School amd have gained from their expertise in developing the childrens’ music and drama skills. The drama club have been given opportunities to work in the school and alongside specialist staff on their productions of Joseph and The Jungle Book. This has developed both the childrens’ skills and skills of the teachers in both schools involved.

We share and celebrate pupils’ achievements through productions, special assemblies e.t.c and as a consequence, children who may have had low self esteem become more confident in their own abilities. We always aim to ensure that all pupils are given access to a range of facilities, resources and equipment, so that they are able to experience the full arts curriculum.

In March 2005 and March 2006, as part of a joint project between Gateshead Council’s Raising Achievement Service and Cultural Services, a Culture and Creativity questionnaire was sent out to as many schools as possible. The aim was to measure the current creative ‘scene’ in these schools in order to help with the planning and provision of culture and creativity in schools in the future.
This year we want to find out to what extent the provision for arts and culture has changed, improved, suffered etc, within these schools. It’s the third and final year this questionnaire is being sent out, so we need as many replies as possible and would really appreciate your involvement. The results will be analysed and collated and we look forward to sharing them with you.
We would therefore hope you can take the time to complete this questionnaire (attached) and return to Amelia Davies, Arts Team, West Street, Gateshead, NE8 1HE or email to ameliadavies@gateshead.gov.uk

We had stall holders from some fantastic artistic and cultural organisations including Seven Stories, The Sage Gateshead, Baltic, Gem Arts, Tyne and Wear Museums, NE Regional Museum hub with their very popular freebie bags, Eye of the Fly and Dance City.

Teachers had the opportunity to try proggy matting, felt making, chinese painting, weaving with recycled materials, view DVDs of organisations work and pick up loads of information directly from organisations. The 2007 CIE Directory of cultural partners was also launched and given to attending teachers on the day.

We also had Monster Productions in costume, Emma Boor with her puppet show, 'Cinderella Green the Recycling Queen' and African drumming with Arts Isiziba and an after-school club from St Joseph's in Highfield, who all helped to entertained us.

I'd like to give a HUGE thank-you to the Stall Holders who were all fantastic, and I hope that the teachers enjoyed the day.

Please feel free to leave any comments on the Showcase or information on Stall Holders and I'll get back to you.

FROG MAN by Mick Martin
‘Surreal, twisted and absolutely funny’ – Edinburgh Guide
Friday 22nd June @ 6.30 pm, Caedmon Hall.
Following on from a highly successful run at this years’ Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a one off (entirely sold out!) performance at Wakefield Arts Centre in October, Frog Man is on the loose once again in 2007!
From a suburban nightmare to sub aquatic bliss – this is a story of love, bullying and the turgid waters of domestic life. It begins one fateful afternoon down by the canal when Kenny and Kelly, two ordinary kids, steal Adrian Dunfor’s kite and their game goes horribly wrong…

Now Kenny is a police frogman and Kelly has dreadful asthma. They live at 46 Sunnybrook Meadow and drive a 4x4 in case anyone tries to murder them on the way to the supermarket. But that afternoon is with them still...

“Wonderfully sardonic pitch-black comedy. Witty one-liners abound throughout… Glorious and innovative - left me breathless
Three Weeks Magazine
“George Orwell meets Nick Hornby, but with a plus…
The Observer
Written by award winning MICK MARTIN, (Once Upon A Time In Wigan, The Life & Times of Young Bob Scallion) and directed by JUDE WRIGHT.
Frog Man is very funny - but with dark and at times disturbing overtones. The production appeals to established drama attendees and new audiences alike. It carries the personal recommendation of Alison Andrews, Arts Council Yorkshire Performance Arts Officer amongst others.
This show is suitable for audiences aged 14 upwards.
Running time approx 70 minutes

Do something different with your Sarurday night...This is a one off event in Newcastle and Gateshead on Saturday 19th May and is an amazing celebration of the international 'Museums at Night' Festival.
Fifteen venues across Gateshead and Newcastle will be opening their doors from 7-11pm and will be, 'bursting with culture'!
Free buses will transport you to venues throughout the evening.
I think this sounds fantastic! All of the participating venues and events are on the website:
